What is the 'Treaty of Waitangi', when was it signed and how did it get its name?


ContractWaitangi - the agreement signed by representatives of the Great Britain and leaders of some tribes Maory on February, 6th, 1840. The contract has been signed in the settlement Vajtangi, given to the agreement the name. According to the agreement New Zealand passed in management of the Great Britain, in exchange for it Maory kept the property and non-property rights, received protection of the Great Britain and transferred the Great Britain exclusive rights to purchase at them the grounds. Every year on February, 6th, New Zealand marks signing the Agreement. It is considered to be, that the contract has put a basis to creation of the state New Zealand and is one of the basic constitutional documents of the country.
Day Waitangi is the state holiday of New Zealand. In 1997 of UNESCO has included Contract Waitangi in the register « Memory of the world ».





It is considered to be one of the basic founders of the text of the Contract British naval officer William Hobson
